The Benue APC Governorship Candidate, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Jime, has reiterated his appeal to Gov. Samuel Ortom and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join him and the APC in running a campaign of issues and ideas.
Jime, who was reacting on Sunday to the renewed waves of smear campaigns and character assassinations against him in the mass and mouth-media, said a repeat of his appeal has become imperative so as not to needlessly heat up the polity and divert attention from the critical issue of leadership failure.
A statement released by his Campaign Organization and signed by its Secretary, Hon. Sontor Solomon, quotes the APC governorship candidate as regretting that “rather than meet the APC on the highroad of issues and ideas, the Ortom crowd has remained stuck down there in the gutter of irredeemable falsehood, satanic fabrications and nervous hysteria.”
The statement reads in part: “We understand the panic mode Jime’s emergence has thrown Gov. Ortom into; and we also understand that Jime has given the PDP a nervous breakdown. And in that condition, anything irrational is possible, with the Ortom entourage not bothering about limits.
“However, to suddenly donate Ortom’s prized adviser, Mr. Galolo, to the APC guber-candidate as well as manufacture a phantom group, and to purport same to identify with him (Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Jime), with Galolo heading it, is the height of morbid politics.
“True, the analogue convention may hold that there is no morality in politics, but it behoves on politicians playing the game in this Digital Age to re-define its rules of engagement, refine its content and ennoble its character. And this is more so for candidates espousing Born-Again Christianity and sloganizing about God!”
The statement goes on: “For us in Team Jime and the Benue APC, we may be politicians, but we are still pledged to the fundamental tenets of fair-play and the high-road of an issues-based campaign. After all, it is not a do-or-die affair!
“We, therefore, call on Ortom and the PDP to join us on this moral high-road. It is very strange that after Jime’s congratulatory message to Ortom, in which he called for a campaign of issues, a desperate Ortom’s response should be these torrents of smear-campaigns and most heinous fabrications.
“As we said in our congratulatory message to Ortom and the other guber-candidates, let us be guided by the solemn fact that Benue is bigger than our individual quests or even our political parties. In all things and at all times, let’s put Benue first.”
Quoting from the earlier Congratulatory Message, the statement reiterates: “For us in the APC, we pledge to continue our campaigns on the moral high-road i.e. a campaign of issues and ideas; a campaign devoid of rancour, violence and hate – whether in speech or action.
“We pledge ourselves to a campaign of ideas and robust debates. True, we are in a contest, but let it be a contest of ideas and alternatives. Let us not use the excuse of politics or the anonymity of the cyber-space to smear others, assassinate their characters, libel their personalities or murder their reputations.
“And so, we task our co-contenders to elevate the 2019 campaign above the prattle of petty-politics, the cacophony of the market-square or the chatter of chartered politicians. Ours should not only be a declaration of the fair-play; it must be the celebration and the triumph of the true democratic temper.”
