PRESIDENT BUHARI ARRIVES CHINA FOR THE 7TH SUMMIT OF THE FORUM ON CHINA-AFRICA COOPERATION
** President Buhari has landed in Beijing, China for the 7th Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.
Buhari’s first engagement in the country will be an interactive session with the Nigerian Community in China at the Nigerian Embassy.
He is also expected to deliver his remarks as the current chairman of ECOWAS at the “High-level Dialogue between Chinese and African leaders, business representatives and African entrepreneurs.”
*. The Army said yesterday that there was no truth in a report of fresh Boko Haram attack on a military barrack in Borno State. A news agency report had alleged the death of ‘at least 30 soldiers’ when insurgents ‘overran a military base’ in the northern part of the state late Thursday. The terrorists allegedly overwhelmed the troops who were forced to withdraw before reinforcements came. But contacted yesterday to confirm the report, an army contact dismissed it as fake.
*. Veteran cinematographer, Tunde Kelani, has emerged the winner of the 2018 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards’ Industry Merit Award. He wasn’t the only winner of the night as actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde emerged the Best Actress in a drama movie/TV series. Former Big Brother Naija contestant, Bisola Aiyeola also won the Trail Blazer Award. Folarin Falana, popularly called Falz carted home the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Movie/TV Series category.
- FOREIGN SCENE:
A new poll conducted in the United States shows that half of Americans want President Donald Trump to be impeached. The poll, conducted by ABC and theWashington Post shows that 50% of people favour impeachment, with 60% stating that they disapprove of his performance in office thus far. The results of the poll come a week after his lawyer Michael Cohen pleaded guilty to using campaign money to pay off former porn star Stormy Daniels and his previous campaign manager Paul Mannafort was found guilty of fraud.
- FOREIGN SCENE:
Nigeria is in the process of taking a $328 million loan from the Chinese EXIM Bank. An agreement for the loan is scheduled to be signed by President Buhari and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, during Buhari’s current trip to that country. The agreement is on the National Information and Communication Technology Infrastructure Backbone Phase 11 (NICTIB 11) between Galaxy Backbone Limited and Huawei Technologies Limited (HUAWEI). Buhari arrived Beijing yesterday to attend the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) taking place tomorrow and Tuesday.
Presidency say comment credited to the US President, Donald Trump won’t keep other world leaders away from President Buhari. While the British Prime Minister, Theresa May visited Buhari in Abuja on Wednesday, the German Chancellor, Ms Angela Merkel did the same on Friday. Speaking with journalists on arrival in Beijing, China, the SSA on Media and publicity, Garba Shehu, said that there is a special attraction to Buhari and Nigeria. “The fact that the entire world and world leaders are cueing up to meet President Buhari, is an indication that there is something about President Buhari” he said
The upward review of the Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms by APC has suffered a setback as President Buhari has told the NWC members of the party that N55 million is too high for him. The President had four years ago complained over the N27.5 million nomination forms for the Presidential ticket and had argued that if he had his way, he would have ensured downward review of the fees. But the National Working Committee of the APC has reviewed the nomination forms upward to the tune of N55 million.
- FORMER PRESIDENT:
Goodluck Jonathan was yesterday honoured as the ‘Icon of Democracy’ by Rivers State-owned Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt, following his worthy contributions towards deepening democracy in Nigeria. The Pro- Chancellor of the University, King A.M Ikuru, who conducted the investiture at the institution’s 35th/36th Convocation ceremony on Saturday in Port Harcourt, said the award was the first of its kind in the history of the university. He further described Mr. Jonathan as a true democrat and man of peace who was deeply committed to the growth and development of the country.
- STATE GOVERNMENT:
Akwa Ibom State Governor has said that he has no intention of dumping PDP. Gov. Udom recently declared to run for second term on the platform of the PDP few days after a former Senate minority leader, Akpabio joined the APC. Speaking with Punch, Governor Udom said the defection of the former Governor did not come to him as a surprise, but admitted that it was unexpected. Responding to the impression in some quarters that the lawmaker has a hold on Akwa Ibom and that he (Udom) could have contemplated joining him in the APC, the Governor said, “That is not possible. I’m not that kind of politician.
The National leadership of PDP, has said that all its presidential aspirants must sign an undertaking that they will abide by the outcome of its presidential primary slated for October 5 and October 6. PDP also said that the aspirants would give a commitment to the party, that they would not defect to other political parties either before or after the primary. The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan, speaking with newsmen in Abuja on Friday, said that all the aspirants had been informed about the need to have what he called “code of conduct” ahead of the primary.
Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi and APC in Rivers State yesterday denied appointment of Chief Executive of Sahara Energy, Tony Cole, as governorship candidate of the party. The media office of the minister, in a statement yesterday from China where Amaechi is part of the federal government’s delegation, said there was no truth in reports to the effect that Cole has been adopted as Rivers APC governorship candidate..Rivers Publicity Secretary of APC, Chief Chris Finebone, speaking in Port-Harcourt, also said there was no such development.
There is unease in the Southeast zone over the current plan by the Nigerian Army to launch Python Dance 3 (Egwueke 3) in the region. Reacting to the development, Anambra State President of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Chief Damian Okeke Ogene, has warned the federal government that the re-introduction of Operation Python Dance is causing grave tension in the Southeast region. Speaking with newsmen in Awka, Anambra State, Ogene said the proposed Python Dance 3 would yield better result if the soldiers were deployed to Sambisa forest, Benue, Taraba and other troubled parts of the country, where innocent citizens were being killed on daily basis.
Popular singer, Davido, has left the mandatory three-week National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) orientation exercise and flown to Boston, USA for his tour. The ‘FIA’ crooner had caused a stir at the Lagos State NYSC orientation camp in Iyana Ipaja, when he showed up for registration. On Thursday, the artiste returned to the camp for the swearing-in ceremony. However, in a post on his Instagram page on Friday, he announced the commencement of his US tour. “Boston US! House of Blues tonite!! Sold out! Let’s get litty! Made in America festival!” he wrote.
