Chief Audu Ogbe: An Enemy Within.
I thought of a better title than this but obviously none could make more meaning after this one depicts exactly what APC in Benue state is going through just because of this man; the minister of Agriculture, chief Audu Ogbe. This is a man that has been one of the biggest benefactor of the 2015 change mantra that eroded the state yet contributed nothing to develop the major strength of the state in agriculture, an area he hold sway as a grade ‘A’ minister of the federal republic of Nigeria.
It is no doubt that chief Ogbe have an impressive profile owing to the various positions he has held in the past till present but cannot beat his chest to have made anybody in the state not alone his Idoma kindred where he hails from. He is so egocentric and hates the progress of any Benue man especially if such person comes to national limelight. This is more of a reason his body language became suspicious the moment Ochagwu Steven Lawani emerged the APC flag-bearer for the senate in zone c.
Let me tell you a little history about this two men who are both illustrious sons of Idoma land. They’re both alumni of Mount Saint Michael, Alaide and in fact classmates. Chief Lawani was the class prefect of Chief Audu Ogbe and it was said that young Ogbe wanted to be the prefect of the class by all means and only succeeded when the young Lawani took ill and was absent from school for few days. Audu Ogbe couldn’t hide his desperation and plotted the removal of his kinsman who was suppose to be a brother. Ever since then, he has continued in that rivalry between himself and Ochagwu. Matters were made worst when Chief Lawani became the senatorial candidate of the APC. In fact, it will be a surprise to some of it’s (APC) supporters to know that Audu Ogbe been an APC chieftain gave Comrade Patrick Abba Moro 5 million naira when the PDP candidate became cash strapped few days to the election just to make sure his evil plot against chief Lawani is well executed. You may recall that some years back, Chief Ogbe accused Ochagwu Steve Lawani of attempting to assasinate him just to ridicule the highly respected man who is known to be peaceful and gentle. His hatred on Chief Lawani knows no bound and he insisted on that falsehood until Ochagwu had to go before the gods of the land (Alekwu) to swear in order to vindicate his innocence. If you know him (chief Ogbe) very well, what he detest most is to subordinate anybody and he was obviously envious of the bright chances of the APC senatorial candidate. We made frantic effort to expose this initially but the party thought it could sweep it under the carpet.
Secondly, the Sunny Oche factor. APC looks good with him in zone c until Audu Ogbe became worrisome of the young man’s popularity and didn’t like his loyalty to his major rivals in the state, senator George Akume and Chief Steven Lawani. One may think he should be ascending to the status of an elder statesman by now as his age befits that assertion but unfortunately this is not the case with him as his integrity will quickly be called to question going by this findings. His cohort in the plot, one Mr. Inalegwu Johnson in connivance with chief Nelson Alapa who are both notorious for extorting money from contestants and taking some portion of it to the minister to substitute candidates who has the wherewithal to win and influence votes for APC and replace it with unpopular aspirants that lacks the strength to face an opposition in such a competitive election. Sincerely, we in the nitty gritty of the polity knows that apart from the monetary gain, chief Ogbe is secretly working against the party in the state to destroy the wings of Akume and co which seems to be increasingly rising at the federal level. So for him, it is killing ‘two birds with one stone’. What did he do? After realizing that Hon. Sunny Oche enjoys an overwhelming support across the state, he knew if he substitute his name, there will be severe consequencies capable of costing APC a substantial amount of votes in the state but yet went ahead to do it because that is exactly what he wants.
Prior to the 2003 general elections when he was the PDP national chairman, he also had this rivalry with the late Engr. Andrew Agom and when his in-law, Hon. David Idoko won the primary against incumbent house of rep. member Sam Obande , he wanted to do the same but met stiffer opposition from the party chieftains who were smart enough to see his evil plot. He was reprimanded and the bitter rivalry continued between the duo until sadly, Engr. Agom was assinated. In chief Ogbe’s dictionary, the one word that possibly pre-occupy his mind is egocentrism. A word that highly characterize his behavior and if there is anything to savage for APC before the governorship election, they should embark on a serious reconciliation with the aggrieved in order to woo the electorates back to its fold . They must do that as quickly as possible to boost the popularity the party had hitherto enjoyed.
